What causes hip pain?

You might have acute hip pain from trauma like a sports injury or auto accident that causes sudden damage to the joint. Fractures, dislocations, sprains and strains are the most common examples.

Hip pain can also develop from overuse injuries if you make the same movements for long periods. Tendonitis (inflammation of the tendons) and bursitis (inflammation of the cushioning sacs in the joints) frequently cause chronic hip pain.

One of the most frequent causes of hip pain is deterioration in the joints caused by arthritis. While many forms of this disease exist, osteoarthritis is the one you’re most likely to get. Years of wear-and-tear lead to erosion of the articular cartilage covering your bones. Inflammation and pain develop as the bones rub together.

In some cases, people who’ve already had joint replacement surgery sometimes experience problems with their implants that trigger hip pain.

How is hip pain treated?

Unless you have a severe injury that requires urgent surgery, conservative or minimally invasive treatments are often effective in resolving hip pain. These include physical therapy, activity modification, medication, iovera°® cryoanalgesia, and joint injections. Corticosteroid (powerful anti-inflammatories) injected into the joint can reduce persistent or severe inflammation and pain.

If you don’t get sufficient benefit from these therapies and require surgical care, the AZ Ortho team specializes in joint replacement and other minimally invasive hip procedures, including anterior hip replacement.

What kind of hip surgery might I need?

Your surgeon will tell you about your hip surgery options and advise you on the best one for your condition. Options include:

Hip arthroscopy

Arthroscopy is a minimally invasive way of accessing the joint without making large incisions. Your surgeon inserts a tiny camera on a flexible tube through a small cut, using images relayed by the camera to guide their instruments.

Hip replacement

Hip replacement may be full or partial. Both surgeries involve taking away damaged areas of the joint and substituting them with artificial parts. Preserving as much healthy natural bone as possible, your surgeon takes away the ball-shaped bone at the top of your leg (femoral head) and the socket (acetabulum) in your pelvis.

If your pain is due to a problem with an existing artificial hip, the AZ Ortho team can perform revision hip replacement surgery. This complex procedure involves repairing or replacing the worn or faulty parts of the joint.
